Department of Pastoral Theology

The Department of Pastoral Theology continues and develops the activities of IPER (Institute for Pastoral and Religious Studies), founded in 1946 to prepare individuals called to pastoral responsibilities in an increasingly wide range of fields.

Through this department, the Faculty of Theology awards university diplomas. The modular structure of the programmes allows students to take individual courses, complete a one-year certificate, a two-year diploma, or earn the professional qualification of Pastoral Project Coordinator, officially recognised by the French Ministry of Labour.

The Department of Pastoral Theology also organises Monday sessions in pastoral theology and hosts the Pauline Jaricot Chair.

Pastoral Theology is being reinvented at the Faculty of Theology for the 2026–2027 academic year:

IPER is becoming the Department of Pastoral Theology and is now fully integrated into the Faculty. Brother Gonzague de Longcamp, Director of the Department, explains:

Our DNA

A strong human and ecclesial experience characterised by meaningful relationships, the joy of being disciples of Christ within a diversity of personal stories and perspectives, moments of fellowship and celebration, and attentive support for each individual. The department offers an adapted and interactive pedagogy combining theoretical courses with group work, complemented by interdisciplinary study days, themed sessions, and internships. It is the only university-level theological and pastoral training programme offering such a comprehensive practical approach: tailored pastoral placements with diocesan mentors, workshops for professional practice analysis and pastoral reflection, and pastoral theology modules connected to current issues.
