Faculty of Literature and Civilizations
The Faculty brings together two departments, one school, one institute and one UNESCO Chair.
UCLy's Faculty of Literature and Civilizations promotes an interdisciplinary approach to teaching:
- Literature, Education, Culture, Journalism, History, Geopolitics and Political Science through the Departments of Literature and History and the Richelieu Institute;
- Languages, international and intercultural communication, translation and international relations through ESTRI – School for International Careers, for students with a strong interest in multilingual and multicultural environments.

Department of Literature
The Department of Literature offers a Bachelor's Degree in French Literature together with a preparatory programme for the French Institutes of Political Studies (IEP).
The Bachelor's programme provides an interdisciplinary curriculum built around a major in French Literature and one of five minors:
- Creative Writing,
- Cultural Professions,
- Journalism,
- Education,
- Contemporary Social Issues.
Third year students may join a study abroad program at a partner university in countries such as Canada, Hungary, Italy, United Kingdom, Argentina, South Korea, etc.
Department of History
The Department of History offers a Bachelor's Degree in History on the Lyon and Annecy campuses, as well as a Master's Degree in History.
The Bachelor's Degree in History at UCLy provides a broad, interdisciplinary education covering the four major historical periods: Ancient, Medieval, Early Modern and Contemporary History. Students explore political, ideological, social and economic issues while placing particular emphasis on the History of International Relations.
Students in History may also choose one of two specialisation tracks:
- Political Science and Geopolitics
- Political Science and Geographic Studies
Richelieu Institute
The Richelieu Institute is dedicated to the study of History and Geopolitics. It provides an interdisciplinary approach to understanding today's world by combining historical analysis with geopolitical perspectives.
The Institute offers University Diplomas (D.U.) open to students from the first year of undergraduate studies through to Master's level. Its programmes explore major contemporary issues, including international crises and conflicts, Central and Eastern Europe, and the Mediterranean world, while developing students' analytical, research and critical thinking skills.
