Society & Family Institute

Founded in 1974 by legal scholar Emma Gounot, the Institute for Society & Family is the only French university-based multidisciplinary institute dedicated to the study of the family.

The Society & Family Institute is a department of UCLy’s Faculty of Law and European and International Political Studies.

The Society & Family Institute: study and train to support families, children, and vulnerable individuals

A Centre for Research

The Society & Family Institute (ISF) studies how couples, parents and children experience their relationships and how these relationships interact with society.

In the face of ongoing changes within the family, shaped by social transformations, the Society & Family Institute adopts a multidisciplinary approach combining Law, Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology. The Institute sheds light on these dynamics by engaging in dialogue with other researchers and social stakeholders and sharing knowledge and experience with all those working in this field.

A Centre for Education and Training

Because understanding is not enough, the ISF is also a place of learning and professional development for students and practitioners, preparing them to address the contemporary challenges faced by families, children and people in vulnerable situations.

Through its multidisciplinary approach — combining Law, Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology — the Institute provides tools to understand, support and protect families, particularly children and vulnerable individuals.
