Advancing science and innovation to address today’s health and environmental challenges

Faculty of Sciences and Health

The Faculty of Sciences and Health brings together ESTBB – School of Engineering in Biotechnology and IFTLM – Institute for Medical Laboratory Science.

It has 15 teaching and research laboratories on the Saint-Paul Campus, providing students with extensive opportunities for practical, hands-on learning.

Through multidisciplinary education, close partnerships with industry and healthcare organisations, and access to specialised scientific facilities, the Faculty prepares future professionals to address today’s scientific, biomedical and health challenges.

ESTBB – School of Engineering in Biotechnology (Lyon & Annecy)

Founded in 1952, ESTBB trains engineers in the life sciences with expertise in biotechnology, preparing them to address challenges in human, animal and environmental health within an international context. Accredited by the French Engineering Accreditation Commission (CTI), the School is located in Lyon, at the heart of one of Europe’s leading life sciences and biotechnology ecosystems, and offers highly professional programmes, including work-study pathways.

ESTBB’s educational approach is guided by the One Health concept, which recognises the close interconnection between human health, animal health, biodiversity and the environment. This vision underpins both its teaching and research activities.

As part of UCLy, ESTBB benefits from 13 state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories and is developing a dedicated Biotech Hub. The School is connected to a network of more than 1,400 partners, including research laboratories, universities, professional organisations and leading companies such as Sanofi, Bayer, L’Oréal Research & Innovation and Yoplait, providing students with outstanding opportunities for collaboration and professional development.

IFTLM – Institute for Medical Laboratory Science

Founded in 1975, IFTLM prepares future professionals in biomedical diagnostics and quality management for the pharmaceutical and biomedical sectors.

Its programmes combine scientific knowledge, laboratory practice and professional experience, enabling students to develop the technical expertise, analytical skills and professional identity required in today’s healthcare environment. Through a student-centred approach and close collaboration with healthcare institutions and industry, IFTLM supports each student throughout their academic and professional journey.

Logo IFTLM

Since 2013, ESTBB and IFTLM have been ISO 9001:2015 certified. This certification reflects the Faculty's commitment to continuous improvement and ensures that its programmes meet the highest standards of quality for students, partners, employers and the wider scientific community.

Research within the Faculty of Sciences and Health

Research within the Faculty is conducted through UCLy’s Confluence Research Unit (EA 15 98): Sciences and Humanities and is supported in particular by:

  • Research Group 5 – Ecology, Epistemology and Ethics
  • Research Group 7 – Biotechnologies, Health and Ethics whose work explores the links between microbial biodiversity, human health and environmental challenges.
