The Faculty of Philosophy at UCLy brings together a canonical Faculty of Philosophy and UNIVA (Université Vie Active), creating a unique environment that combines academic teaching, research and lifelong learning.

Founded in 1932, the Faculty of Philosophy is a centre for teaching and research open to all. Through dialogue with other disciplines, it encourages rigorous philosophical reflection on the major questions shaping contemporary society and human experience.

Open to students and lifelong learners alike, the Faculty of Philosophy promotes critical thinking and interdisciplinary dialogue while addressing today's ethical, cultural and societal challenges.

Its research is structured around two main areas:

  • Philosophy and Christianity
  • Philosophy, Ethics and Life Sciences

Research within the Faculty of Philosophy

Research is closely connected to UCLy’s Confluence Research Unit: Sciences and Humanities (EA 1598), particularly through the following research groups:

  • Research Group 1 – Theology, Philosophy and Religious Studies in Contemporary Contexts
  • Research Group 5 – Ecology, Epistemology and Ethics

UNIVA

UNIVA (Université Vie Active), UCLy's lifelong learning institute, offers courses, workshops, lectures, cultural visits and study trips in Lyon. Open to everyone, with no academic prerequisites, it welcomes learners of all ages who wish to broaden their knowledge and engage in lifelong learning.

Drawing on the expertise of UCLy's academic community, UNIVA offers a wide range of programmes in philosophy, history, literature, art, psychology, religions, geopolitics, economics and the sciences.
