Innovations in information technology have prompted a number of changes that can be encapsulated in the term the Digital Economy. This course focuses on the work-related implications of this shift. Much emphasis has been placed on the ‘gig’ or ‘platform’ economy. This course will engage with that topic. It will also explore how the AI Act may impact the workplace. Overall, we will explore how pervasive the changes to work have been as prompted by information technology.
The examples used in this course will primarily be the EU and UK jurisdictions (but we will look at some North American examples also). The UK will be a particularly useful focus here as it is (upon departure from the EU) be a good example of efforts to stimulate an economy in the digital era. The course, then, will better situate students to assess the labour implications of the digital economy as considerations develop
