Résumé

The Gymnophiona is the third amphibian order, Anura and Urodela being the two others, and contains some 154 species belonging to 34 genera and 6 families. This book devoted to reproductive biology and phylogeny of Gymnophiona begins with a chapter on the history of research in this groups. The second chapter concerning the phylogeny of Gymnophiona with systematics, gives the most recent classification of these species with a useful diagnosis. Other chapters deal with general observations on anatomy, physiology, with special references to male and femal urogenital systems ; the Mullerian gland in Uraeotyphlus narayani ; endocrinology of reproduction in both males and females ; spermatogenesis ; the structure of spermatozoa with phylogenetic conclusions ; oogenesis and folliculogenesis ; embryonic development of genital glands, a neglected aspect of caecilian anatomy : parity ; and the peculiar cas of viviparity in Typhlonectes compressicauda.
