Prérequis

Une bonne maîtrise de la langue (les cours et le contrôle des connaissances sont en
anglais).

Objectifs

Mieux comprendre l’histoire des États-Unis, entre 1877 et 1914, ère qui voit le pays se transformer en puissance mondiale, sur les plans politiques, économiques, et sociales.
Il permet de travailler la compréhension orale et écrite en anglais, ainsi que l’expression écrite en anglais.
Il met en œuvre lectures et analyses de textes secondaires et sources primaires en anglais.

Contenu

From the Gilded Age to Progressivism : 1877 – 1914

Le cours permettra les élèves d’explorer l’instauration de la ségrégation raciale, l’émergence des États-Unis comme puissance industriel, économique, et impériale ; ainsi que tous les conflits politiques et sociales que ces transformations entraineront. Entre 1877 et 1932 le « libéralisme » du 19^ème siècle, en tant que philosophie sociale et politique, va faire face à des énormes challenges qui vont faire naissance à l’hybride libérale-progressiste qui est le « New Deal » de Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Plusieurs thèmes seront explorés: l’émergence des États-Unis comme leader dans le politique internationale, la tension entre la théorie d’égalité politique et la réalité émergeante des énormes inégalités économiques crées par la Révolution Industrielle, l’évolution du statut des femmes et leurs implications dans divers mouvement politique, et bien sûr la question de race et racisme ; qui se manifeste dans l’institution de la ségrégation, bien évidemment, mais aussi dans les débats sur l’immigrations, l’impérialisme, et la conquête du « Wild West ».
