Objectifs

Donner un aperçu de l’histoire du Japon d’Edo (1603-1868) sous tous ses aspects.
Familiariser les étudiant-es avec l’analyse de sources primaires portant sur un espace extra-européen.
Familiariser les étudiant-es avec des débats historiographiques anciens et contemporains sur l’histoire du Japon moderne.

Provide an overview of the history of Edo Japan (1603-1868), covering the country's political, social, economic, and cultural history.
Familiarize students with the analysis of primary sources relating to a non-European region.
Familiarize students with past and present historiographical debates on the history of early modern Japan.

Chaque séance alternera entre cours magistral et lecture collective de sources primaires, dont la liste sera communiquée lors de la première séance.

Each class will alternate between lectures and collective readings of primary sources. A catalogue of primary sources will be provided during the first class.
