Abstract

Innovation in Dialogue: Interdisciplinary Perspectives and Contemporary Challenges

This introduction aims to reflect on an interdisciplinary concept of innovation by examining its historical, anthropological, economic, and social foundations. Given the diversity of definitions and uses associated with innovation, it explores how different disciplines conceptualize the phenomenon and highlights the limits of purely technological or economic perspectives. The central question is how innovation can be understood as a multidimensional process involving invention, diffusion, appropriation, social transformation, and ethical concerns. Drawing on the works of Schumpeter, Rogers, von Hippel, Katz, and Lazarsfeld, the paper emphasizes the relational and collective nature of innovation. It also discusses the role of social innovation, the contribution of vulnerability to creative processes, and the distinction between innovation and progress. The paper ultimately argues that innovation can only be fully understood through a dialogue between disciplines, actors, and systems of values.

Summary

Innovation, novelty, and inspiration: an interdisciplinary dialogue between life sciences and biblical studies

This article rethinks innovation in the face of ecological crises by bringing together life sciences and biblical studies. In the life sciences, innovation emerges in an unintentional way, only its applications introduce intentionality toward problem-solving. In biblical studies, it involves a hermeneutical renewal: the text remains stable, but meanings evolve according to contexts and interpreters. Both fields converge around the notion of inspiration, understood not as creation ex nihilo but as the reactivation of ancient potentialities. Bio-inspiration invites us to move beyond the dualisms of nature/culture and human/non-human, challenging anthropocentrism in favour of an integral ecology that articulates science, ethics and theology. Finally, innovation must be accompanied by ethical limits and emerges as a process of reinterpretation and reconnection to sources, oriented toward a lasting transformation of our relationship to the world.

Summary

Lexical novelties and new references. Neologisms as a reflection of the changes and evolutions of ancient societies

Diachronic analysis of neologisms shows their importance in the study of society and ancient civilisations. New words reflect radical social and professional changes within communities that have employed them. In most cases, new lexis allows us to backdate « inventions » as well as modern discoveries in many technical domains: architecture (ventidotto, orticini) or plant physiology (nodelletto, verso) by many centuries. In the absence of traditional historical proof, these terms can often constitute the only tangible elements to provide access to everyday elements from civilisations long bygone. This is the case with caldellus, an invigorating drink that was used in Cenobitic communities of Visigothic Gaule in the 5th and 6th centuries AD. This type of investigation, in which lexicology acts as a science that is essentially auxiliary, not only to history and archaeology but also to the natural sciences, is a clear example of the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation in contemporary research.

Abstract

Naming to conceptualize innovation in medical genetics. A dialogue with ‘Neologisms as a reflection of the evolution of ancient societies’

This article engages in a dialogue with Moreno Campetella’s contribution, which argues that the creation of new words reflects technical and social transformations. He thus draws a parallel between the lexical changes observed by the linguist and those seen in genetics. Medical genetics is highlighted here as a field where neologisms accompany advances, and where naming a biological phenomenon is crucial to its conceptualization. Examples illustrate how terms like ‘gene’ were defined before their biological realities were fully understood. The emergence of the word ‘gene’, coined by Wilhelm Johannsen in 1909, symbolizes this dynamic, and the discovery of DNA in 1953 reinvented its meaning while retaining its designation.

Abstract

Responsibility and Spirituality: Two Pillars for a Critical Philosophy of Innovation

This article examines the normative foundations of contemporary innovation. After tracing the long history of the concept, from Mesopotamian mythologies to Schumpeterian theory, it analyses its unthought anthropological, environmental and political dimensions. Faced with the growing gap between transformative power and capacity for discernment, it proposes articulating two conceptual pillars: an anticipatory responsibility, following Hans Jonas, and a philosophical spirituality understood as the inner formation of the subject, drawing on Paul Fauconnet and the ancient spiritual exercises revisited by Pierre Hadot and Xavier Pavie. Their articulation defines a ‘responsible and spiritual innovator’, capable of subordinating the logic of ‘how’ to the demand of ‘why’.

Immunitary logic in light of teleological inversion

Abstract

Some observers of modernity are highlighting the phenomenon of security overkill. Ultimately, this counter-productivity stems from the elevation of life to the status of ultimate goal. The aim of this article is to show why the protection of life necessarily acquires the status of an ultimate end from the moment that security is conceived against the historical backdrop of teleological inversion. The evacuation of the final cause by the founders of philosophical modernity results in a displacement of the end onto that of which it is the end. Denied any purpose other than to continue its state of uniform rectilinear motion or rest, everything has no purpose other than to continue to exist. This is how life, stripped of its vocation to become a good life, no longer has any purpose other than its own preservation, which gives rise to a circularity, the cause of security overkill.

Abstract

Title: Science and Reverie: From Rational Abstraction to Poetic Imagination in Gaston Bachelard’s thought

Abstract

Gaston Bachelard, a theorist of scientific rationality, also tried to understand the poetic approach to material elements. The need to return to the ordinary experience of physical world has undoubtedly played a part in this research program. However, its poetics testifies above all to the mediation of an imaginative approach to material elements. His view of the sciences articulated on the epistemological obstacle, without excluding the spiritual effort involved in overcoming it. Nor can we exclude an appeal to surpass through immanence and materiality of the Bachelardian poetics. We will therefore try to understand how Bachelard’s critics of knowledge articulates these various aspects of his works.

Scienza e fantasticheria: dall'astrazione razionale all'immaginazione poetica in Gaston Bachelard
