The Faculty of Theology<\/strong> offers undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education for those serving in, or preparing for, ministries within the Catholic Church (including seminarians, members of religious institutes and diocesan staff), as well as for anyone wishing to deepen their knowledge of Christian theology within the academic tradition of the Catholic Church.<\/p>

The Faculty has a large proportion of international students, mainly from Europe, Africa and Asia. The diversity of the students greatly enhances life in our institutes, creating melting pots not only of different cultures, but also of different personal statuses, ages and experiences, with a large number of students taking a course alongside or after a professional career.<\/p>

The Faculty is organised around two institutes:<\/strong><\/p>

Faculty of Theology<\/h2>

Founded in 1878, the Faculty of Theology<\/a> serves the 21 dioceses of south-eastern France by providing academic teaching across the major fields of theology: exegesis of biblical texts, fundamental and dogmatic theology, ethics, patristics (the study of early Christian writings), history of Christianity, spirituality and canon law. It currently welcomes nearly 1,000 students and lifelong learners.<\/p>

As a pontifical faculty, it awards degrees on behalf of the Holy See (canonical degrees), recognised by the French State. It also awards University Diplomas and certificates. In partnership with French public universities, it offers joint doctoral programmes.<\/p>

The Theo en ligne<\/strong> programme enables hundreds of people to study at home at their own pace. Non-assessed learners can also follow any course of their choice.<\/p>

The Faculty\u2019s teaching staff provide expertise in ecclesiastical and, more broadly, social, ethical and religious matters. Faculty members work closely with colleagues from the Faculty of Philosophy to publish the academic journal Th\u00e9ophilyon<\/strong><\/em>. Its partnership with the Institut des Sources Chr\u00e9tiennes<\/em>, a research institute which publishes a collection of ancient Christian texts, makes the Faculty an internationally recognised centre for patristic studies.<\/p>

The Faculty is home to two specialist centres. The Christian Centre for Jewish Studies (CCEJ)<\/strong> promotes greater awareness of Judaism within Christian theology through teaching, conferences and its documentation centre.<\/p>

The Centre for the Study of Cultures and Religions (CECR)<\/strong> fosters dialogue between religious traditions while developing research and training on the place of religion in contemporary organisations..

The Faculty boasts three research chairs: the Christian Unity research chair for ecumenism, the Jean Rodhain research chair<\/strong><\/a> for teaching and studies on charity, and an Armenian studies research chair<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>

THEO Pastorale<\/h2>

Theo Pastorale<\/strong>, part of UCLy's Faculty of Theology, prepares pastoral practitioners for their specific ministries through a teaching approach that combines academic study with practical experience.<\/p>

Building on the legacy of the IPER <\/strong>(Pastoral Institute for Religious Studies), <\/strong>founded in 1946, Theo Pastorale continues to develop programmes designed for those called to pastoral responsibilities in an increasingly diverse range of settings.<\/p>

Through Theo Pastorale, the Faculty of Theology awards University Diplomas. Its flexible, modular programmes allow participants to enrol in individual courses, earn a certificate in one year, complete a diploma in two years, or prepare for the nationally recognised professional qualification of Pastoral Project Officer, accredited by the French Ministry of Labour.<\/p>

Theo Pastorale also organises the Pastoral Theology Mondays lecture series and hosts the Pauline Jaricot Chair<\/strong>.<\/p>
